Rice straw slippers

In Akita Prefecture, Japan, the rice fields turn golden in late summer and lie beneath high piles of snow from December onward. During the cold winter months, I spent time with local rice farmers who, after harvest, transform rice straw into everyday and ceremonial crafts. They taught me how to weave slippers, traditionally worn at home or during festivities.
