A huge amount of food waste is created by the catering industry and restaurants. Some of it can be avoidable, but some not that easy.

In earlier days whole animals were used for food and crafts material. Nowadays the whole animal – including bones and shells – is only used on an industrial scale. On  a small scale however, like in the gastronomy, only the edible parts get consumed, inedible animal parts are considered as waste.

With inedible animal food waste, that I got from local restaurants, cafes and butchers I created a material which could offer an alternative to ceramics, by replacing silica sand that is used as an ingredient in ceramics and glazing, and is getting scarce in our near future.

By replacing replacing silica sand by local waste products, I want to pay attention to a serious yet unknown environmental issue: sand mining and transportation.
